Bringing Wellness to an Underserved Community

In Palacios, Texas a rural coastal town with a population of just over 1,200  access to quality wellness resources had long been limited. Residents expected a small, basic fitness room. Instead, the Calhoun County YMCA introduced a fully equipped express facility designed to support active aging, independence, and long-term health.

What began as a cautious pilot quickly became a vital community resource. Serving a broad rural population stretching across farmland and coastal communities, the facility now supports more than 330 members and has become a daily destination for retirees and older adults seeking safe, accessible fitness close to home.

By combining local investment with YMCA operational leadership, the Palacios Express Gym proved that impactful wellness solutions don’t require a large population, they require the right vision.

“We weren’t planning to go into a community this small, but once we saw the need, we realized this wasn’t about scale, it was about impact.”

Michele Morales | Regional Executive Director for the Calhoun County YMCA

Designing a Fitness Experience for Active Aging

The YMCA intentionally created a fitness environment that supports older adults without compromising quality, performance, or experience. Equipped with SportsArt ECO-NATURAL™ cardio and strength solutions, the facility delivers commercial-grade fitness options tailored to mobility, confidence, and long-term wellness.

Members benefit from low-impact cardio equipment including ellipticals, recumbent cycles, treadmills, and steppers that prioritize joint health, stability, and ease of use. The strength-training area includes selectorized machines, free weights, cable stations, and functional training equipment designed to help members maintain muscle mass, improve balance, and support everyday independence.

Rather than scaling down expectations for an aging population, the facility elevated them ,  creating a polished, professional environment where members feel empowered to train confidently at every stage of life.

“We thought we were just meeting the bare necessities, but once we opened the doors, it became clear the community really needed us, we just didn’t realize how much.”

Michele Morales | Regional Executive Director for the Calhoun County YMCA

A Replicable Model for Rural Wellness

Beyond equipment and design, accessibility has been central to the facility’s success. Through partnerships with Medicare Advantage and other insurance providers, many members can access the gym at little to no additional cost, removing financial barriers for retirees and fixed-income households.

The result is more than a gym. It’s a sustainable wellness ecosystem that encourages consistency, social connection, and healthier aging in a community that previously lacked these resources.

For the Calhoun County YMCA, the Palacios location has become proof that rural communities deserve the same caliber of fitness experience found in larger markets. For SportsArt, it reinforces a growing industry movement toward inclusive fitness environments that support every generation.
