Eco Gym UK
As one of the original green gyms in the world, Eco Gym UK blazed the trail for many other environmentally friendly gyms. Founder Paul Crane and his team believed that taking care of our bodies should not come at the cost of the environment. With that in mind, they created two waste-free facilities that utilize everything from energy efficient lighting, low-flow showers, essential oil cleansers and energy producing cardio equipment.
In 2017, Eco Gym’s Brighton location became the first gym in the world to become Green Circle Certified by showcasing how the use of their original six ECO-POWR™ products were able to reduce their facility’s overall energy consumption by 7%.
For Overview |
IT JUST SEEMS RIGHT THAT AS ADVOCATES OF A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THAT WE SHOULD TAKE THE SAME CARE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AS WE DO WITH OUR OWN BODIES...SPORTSART, FOR US, WAS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE. YOU CAN HARNESS THE POWER OF THE USER AND FEED THAT POWER INTO UTILITY-GRADE ELECTRICITY.

A membership that doesn’t cost the earth
Going green takes a commitment from every member and, at Eco Gym, their goal is to use memberships as a way to inspire behavioral changes for healthier, sustainable living. In order to encourage members of both facilities to participate in heart-healthy cardio and produce clean energy, they began offering an incentive program to members who turned their calories into kilowatts.
The program utilized the SA WELL+™ system to track individual members energy production and offered them a percentage discount based on the watts they created over the month. The more they worked out, the more they could save. Connecting members to the goal of a sustainable facility, on a 1-to-1 level, is creating a sense of community around the common goal and that connection is showing in the numbers.
Creating a community effect
Sustainability within the gym is creating a community effect for the members. Not only is seeing individual contributions to the overall sustainability goal giving members an added layer of meaningfulness to their workouts, but it is also connecting them with other members working towards the same goal. In order to bring a sense of togetherness and sustainability into the community, Eco Gym UK partners with organizations like Surfers Against Sewage to organize beach cleanups and other community events for members to get involved with.
At the gym, Paul and his team are finding that people want to be part of this movement towards sustainability and are excited and willing to go out of their way to be part of the Eco Gym UK community.
WE GET SOME MEMBERS WHO JOIN US PURELY BECAUSE WE’RE AN ECO GYM. WE ENCOURAGE SUSTAINABLE METHODS OF GETTING TO US, OBVIOUSLY, BUT WE GET SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE TRAVELING QUITE A WAYS TO ACTUALLY VISIT OUR FACILITY. PURELY BECAUSE OF WHAT WE DO, AND THEY SHARE THE SAME BELIEFS. WE CAN DIFFERENTIATE ON KIT, WE CAN DIFFERENTIATE ON SERVICE, BUT THIS IS AN ANGLE WHERE WE CAN REALLY DIFFERENTIATE A LOT FROM OTHER PROVIDERS OUT THERE.
